We often get asked ‘should I really be applying sun screen as well if I have SPF within my foundation/make-up?’ The answer is YES!
It has become a popular question and also a popular statement ‘I don’t need to apply an SPF as it’s already in my foundation?’. This is great that your foundation contains an SPF, but it is not enough!
The reasons we apply sun protection is to prevent premature ageing, wrinkles, skin cancer and also protect our skin from environmental agressors. Make-up alone does not give us the coverage we need.
You need seven times the normal amount of foundation and 14 times the normal amount of powder to get the sun protection factor on the label. No-one does this!
Our skin needs a broad-spectrum protection and this can’t always be guaranteed within a make-up brand. What do we mean by broad-spectrum protection?
UVA, UVB AND UVC protection. But also Infra red and visible light. So we are protecting our skin from all angles forming a full shield from them damaging rays.
We should be applying sun screen daily come rain, come shine. Lowering our risks of skin cancer and sun damage. At the Banwell Clinic we are passionate about skin health and always advocate being ’SunSmart’. It is well documented that sun exposure has a direct link to skin cancers, but also 80% of skin aging is caused by the sun.
