Mr Banwell discusses Botox and Beauty

Not tried Botox? Concerned about the potential complications?

Well, it is always good to be cautious but there is no doubt that Botox is the single most effective and by far the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the world. Botox can erase lines and wrinkles, improve facial contour and improve eye shape in a matter of days, without the need for more invasive procedures.

In particular, refreshing the brow area can be achieved easily whilst maintaining a natural, harmonious look. However, some patients are worried about being ‘overcooked’ and indeed Martin Scorsese the movie director, complained that many of his actresses were “frozen” and unable to act. Many of these actresses started seeking botox treatments which work but appear more natural and wear off more quickly in time for their next part on the big screen. This is where the term ‘baby botox’ has been introduced so if patients are a bit cautious to start off with, just ask your Plastic Surgeon to have a smaller dose for a softer effect.

In some patients, you may notice that their eyebrows are more arched, and they may have an almost “angry” appearance. This is due to what is called “Botox Brow.” Botox can be injected into the forehead and between the eyebrows to remove wrinkles there but whilst it is very effective in doing this, it can also possibly create a side effect of an overly arched eyebrow which can sometimes make the person look a little angry.

This occurs for the following reason: there are two vitally important muscles that create the contour of the eyebrow – the frontalis muscle (forehead) which raises the brow and the orbicularis muscle (eye) that lowers the brow look at here. The interplay of these two forces is what creates a pleasing look. Weakening the outer orbicularis can elevate the brow and create a high lateral arch. When combined with central frontalis weakening which can lower the inner brow, a patient may get an unwanted look. Should this happen, some additional Botox in the lateral frontalis can correct the problem and bring the outer brow down.

Mr Banwell, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and skin care expert, comments: The satisfaction rate with Botox is extremely high but be aware that it may take 7-14 days for the full effect of treatment to be realised. It is also important to be aware that problems can occur. I would therefore always recommend seeing a Consultant Plastic Surgeon for an expert opinion.
